Lima 1856 - Iquique 21/5/1879). Son of Colonel Melchor Velarde and Francisca Castañeda, he entered the Naval School in 1872 and graduated as a midshipman in February 1875. He served in Independence and Chalaco, and in 1876 he traveled to Europe on a merchant vessel to carry out professional practices.
The following year it realized an extensive cruise by the Pacific in the French Frigate Magicienne, being promoted to Lieutenant Second to its return to Callao. In 1878 he embarked in the Huáscar, attending to the observation of the past of Mercury by the disc of the Sun. Affected by a lung disease, retired to Jauja. At the outbreak of the War of the Pacific, he returned to board the Huascar, as an officer of orders, passing away in the Combate de Iquique.
